Trip Introduction

Three Peak Climb: Pokalde Peak, Island Peak & Lobuche East Peak can be an amazing journey to explore the three famous trekking peaks of Nepal.  The three famous peaks Pokalde Peak(5,806m/19,043ft), Island Peak(6,189m/20,305ft), and Lobuche East Peak(6,119m/20,070 ft) climb is especially for those who wish to embark on an amazing mountain adventure.

Three Peak Climb: Pokalde Peak, Island Peak & Lobuche East Peak Trip Overview:

The Pokalde Peak is comparatively an easier climb than the Island & Lobuche East Peak. Island Peak, which is also known as the Imja Tse is located at the heart of the Everest region derives its name owing to its striking location in the middle of the Chhukung valley, like an Island on a sea of ice is perhaps the most popular peak in the Everest region.

Lobuche East climb is a bit more challenging than the Island Peak. But, our program has been carefully designed keeping in mind gradual ascent, proper acclimatization, and it's escalating complexity. We are sure that the bliss you will experience after scaling three of the most famous Peaks in the Everest region – Pokalde, Island, and Lobuche East - would certainly remain in your memory forever.

The trail will lead us uphill through the forested path of silver fir, blue pines, rhododendron, and a few magnolia and birch trees. After two hours of hard walking, we will get to Tyangboche, one of the most beautiful places in the Himalayas. The first thing that comes to your eye will be the big Monastery or Gumba, then the large field with campsites and teahouses, lodges beneath the towering majestic beautiful peak Ama Dablam, Everest, Mt. Lhotse, and Lhotse Shar towards the northeast, and more peaks all around you.

#@#Day 07: Trek from Tyangboche to Dingboche (4,410m/14,468 ft) 5-6 hrs walk
#@#The trek will start with a pleasant walk and descend through a forest of birch, fir, juniper, and rhododendron coming to a lovely spot at Deboche (3,650 m) with a magnificent view of mountains and past the long prayer mani wall. The path will be gradual up to the Pangboche village, from here onwards the lush vegetation and tree lines vanish. We will enter the Imjatse Valley to the Dingboche. The place offers a great view of the mighty peaks of Ama Dablam, Nuptse, and Lhotse with a view of the eastern snow-capped mountains including the Island peak or Imjatse 6,189m, which is a popular peak amongst all the trekking peaks in Nepal. Dingboche is a beautiful patchwork of fields enclosed by stonewalls, protecting the crops of barley, buckwheat, and potatoes from the cold winds and grazing animals. Dingboche has about more than ten teahouses and it is also the gateway to Chukung and farther beyond for the most challenging traverses towards the Makalu area and Hinko Valley via Sherpani col (6,100m) and Amphu Laptsa pass (5,780m).

#@#Day 08: Acclimatization day at Dingboche
#@#We will take a day to rest for acclimatization at Dingboche Valley. After an early morning breakfast, we will hike up to Nagarjuna viewpoint (5,050 m) just north of Dingboche. From here, you can see many towering peaks in front of you with a close view of Mt. Lhotse. Also a good view of Mt. Makalu, Island peak, Amadablam, Tawache, Cholatse, Lobuche Peak, and many more from the top. This is one of the best-hidden viewpoints and a way to good acclimatize the climbers. We will enjoy a stroll back to Dingboche for the overnight stay.

#@#Day 09: Trek from Dingboche to Chhukung (4,730m/15,518ft) 8-9 hrs

We will pass through the steep hills, and climb the difficult paths to finally reach our destination. We will reach Chhukung late in the evening. We will have an overnight stay in one of the lodges in Chhukung.

#@#Day 10: Trek from Chhukung to Island Peak Base Camp(5,200m/17,060ft) 3-4 hrs walk

The path will then winds along or below the southern flank of the moraine from the Lhotse Glacier. We will continue short pleasant walking along a streamside that will lead us to what we call “Big-rock”. The route to the Amphu Lapcha lies to the southeast. A crisis cross route through the Imja and Lhotse glacier moraines will lead us to a wide valley flanking the southwest side of Island Peak. We'll reach the Island peak base camp and overnight at the tented camp.

#@#Day 11: Trek from Island Base Camp to Summit Island Peak (6,189m/20,305ft)& back to base camp
#@#We will start our climb early morning through the rock gully. This will not be much difficult but there will be several short rock steps to climb before you will emerge on the right side of the gully. The route will then follow a ridgeline, which will lead to an exhilarating and exposed traverse onto the snout of the summit glacier. You will need to rope up for the glacier as it will contain several crevasses. The path will lead without difficulty, to a 100m/330ft snow and ice slope (40-45 degrees) on which the guides will fix a rope. From the top of this slope, 3 rope lengths along a sharp summit ridge will lead us further to the top. You can enjoy success and be brave to get a summit. After some picture-taking of scenic views, we will descend all the way to base camp overnight.

#@#Day 12: Trek Back from Island Base Camp to Chhukung(4,730m/15,518ft)
#@#We will trek to Chhukung after a successful ascent to the Island Peak Climb. Chhukung is the best destination to get a mesmerizing view of the multiple mountains. We need to walk slowly and at a normal pace. We will be retracing our way downwards and trekking the same way we climbed a few days earlier. Overnight in Chhukung.

#@#Day 13: Rest Day in Chhukung
#@#We will take a day off to rest after the climb. We will need to take a day for the acclimatization after the change in altitude for the two days. Our body needs to be familiar with the change that had been in the past few days. This day can be a complete rest day for you after the climb. If you are tired after the climb, you can stay all day long in the lodge being warm and cozy. You can also choose to explore the surrounding areas of Chhukung if you plan to spend the day hiking. The place is the best destination to get the mesmerizing view of the multiple mountains. Overnight in Chhukung.

#@#Day 14: Trek from Chhukung to Pokalde Base Camp(4,900m/16,076ft)
#@#After an early breakfast, we will trek to the Pokalde Base Camp. We will trek to the steep climbing trail that will take us about 5 to 6 hours to reach the base camp. Though the trek will be short, we will take this as an advantage for acclimatizing purposes. We can learn some ice-climbing skills at the base camp. The base camp of Pokalde Peak is situated near a large circular lake in the middle below the Kongma La pass. Besides, the base camp of the peak, you will receive captivating views of Mt. Makalu, Mt. Amadablam, the southern face of the Nuptse, and many other remarkable mountain peaks in the Everest region. Overnight at Pokalde Peak Base Camp.

#@#Day 15: Trek from Pokalde Base Camp to Pokalde Summit and Trek to Lobuche(4,940 m/16,207 ft)
#@#We will wake up early in the morning and move forth toward our destination. This section of the trip will be demanding as the trip follows the slightly difficult climbing trail through stones. The climbing trail will ultimately reach the narrow rocky summit, Pokalde Peak. Upon conquering the apex of Pokalde Peak, we will observe the most breathtaking and panoramic views of the world’s highest mountains, which include the views of Mt Makalu, Ama Dablam, Pumori, and a number of other tallest peaks in the Khumbu region. After celebrating the captivating vistas from the top of the peak, we will retrace back passing through Kongma La Pass to the long way back to Lobuche. Overnight at Lodge in Lobuche.

#@#Day 16: Trek from Lobuche to Lobuche High Camp(4,950m/16,272 ft)
#@#After breakfast, we will trek to Lobuche Base Camp. You will begin to follow a steep ascent path from Lobuche till we arrive at Lobuche Base Camp, walking along the banks of Lobuche Glacier, enjoying the spectacular views of Cholaste, Tawache, Ama Dablam, Pokalde, Thamserku, and many more. We will further move up to a high camp on the mountain. It will take us about four hours to climb up the bouldery scree and some snow to the site of the high camp. We will set on a small expanse of snow or rock, above a deep, blue lake and close to the mountain. The tents will be shared to keep the load numbers down. You have to go early to bed for a very early alpine start. Overnight at Lobuche High Camp.

#@#Day 17: Summit Lobuche Peak and return back to Lobuche High Camp
#@#We will start early (around 2.30 am) to start climbing the South East Ridge, which is a mixture of moderately steep snow and ice. We will fix ropes along the route. We will ascend steadily to a plateau at around 6000m, and then traverse around to an exposed ridge, which we will follow to the summit slopes. Approximately after six hours of steady climbing, the path will bring us to the far eastern summit. From here, we will take a steady climb along the summit ridge towards the east summit, which for us will mark our summit. The main summit will not be much far in distance but requires some technical climbing which is normally beyond the ability of novice climbers, certainly in terms of the time it would take. This final section of the climb is not for the faint-hearted, as there are huge drops on both sides, so this section will definitely be fixed with a rope. From the top, we will be well rewarded with superb views across to Ama Dablam, Makalu, Lhotse, Everest, Nuptse, Changtse (in Tibet) Pumori, Gyachung Kang, Cho Oyu, and the myriad peaks to the west and south. After a full day's climbing, we will retrace our steps back to Lobuche High Camp. The day's climb could be anywhere between nine to ten hours, depending on conditions and our progress.

#@#Day 18: Trek from Lobuche High Camp to Lobuche(4,940 m/16,207 ft)
#@#We will retrace our steps back to Lobuche Village. It will take us about 6-7 hours to reach the village. The walk will be followed by the beautiful scenery of the mountains beside us. We will start the hike with a little breakfast. The walk continues till we reach Lobuche in the evening. We will stay at Lobuche overnight.

#@#Day 19: Trek from Lobuche to Tyangboche (3,860m/12,664ft) 5-6 hrs walk
#@#After breakfast, we will follow on the gradual downhill overlooking magnificent views of the great Himalayas. The last trail will take us 30 minutes uphill through the forested path to reach Tyangboche. This is one of the most beautiful places in the Himalayas. The first thing that will come to your eye will be the big Tyangboche Monastery, with its stunning background of Ama Dablam, Mt. Everest, and other peaks. Explore the monastery and its surrounding. Overnight at Tyangboche.

#@#Day 20: Trek from Tyangboche to Monjo (2,800m/9,184ft) 5-6 hrs walk
After breakfast, we will take the trek down to Phunkethanga a small settlement with a couple of teahouses. From here the trail will lead us uphill through the forested path with great memories.  After crossing the suspension bridge over the Dudh Koshi River, we will trek onwards to the steep climb from Sanasa to Namche bazaar. We will trek further down to our destination at Monjo for an overnight stay.

#@#Day 21: Trek from Monjo to Lukla (2,800m/9,186ft) 4-5 hrs walk
#@#Our hike will be very easy, with a little up and down hills. The trail will follow the same way we had trekked on the first day to reach Lukla. It will take us about 4 to 5 hours to be back to Lukla. After getting some time to refresh, your guide will re-confirm your flight for the next day morning. You will have time to stroll around. In the evening, we will enjoy the last celebration dinner with the trek crew member. Overnight at Hotel.

A Tea House is a combination of a guesthouse, restaurant, and social hang-out. Private rooms are available in most tea houses. The lodges are fairly basic. The rooms are spare with twin beds and very little additional furniture. Blankets are generally provided. Most bathrooms are shared and toilets are the western version. Most of the Teahouses have running water facilities while some of them may also have hot water available for bathing at an additional cost. It is advisable to carry wet wipes as an alternative.

There is a large dining room more like the lounge, warmed by an iron cylinder, fitted with a chimney duct, in which a log fire is lit. Most teahouses now also have electricity for charging small appliances, mobile phones, and cameras. Some might charge a small amount for this.

Best time to visit Nepal
Nepal is for all seasons! But because of the huge range in altitude and landscape, the climate of Nepal differs significantly throughout the country. The most recommended seasons for trekking are autumn (Sept, Oct, Nov) and spring (March, April, and May). In these seasons you will be rewarded with good weather, sunny and warm with clear skies and outstanding views. During monsoons (June, July, Aug) although there will be no problem with trekking, the issue could be less visibility and rain. For the student of botanicals, a monsoon is a blessing as the higher valleys, mountains, and meadows blossom with flowers and abundant vegetation. You can also trek in winter (Dec, Jan, and Feb). Only, the issue will be cold weather with snowfall at higher elevations.

The trekking routes are filled with trekkers during spring and autumn but during monsoon and winter the routes are not packed and you could enjoy rather the best of nature. However, because of the effects of global warming, the climate is changing worldwide and there could always be the possibility of exceptions in these weather patterns. There could be a hoax of bad weather and sometimes even in adverse months during the best seasons too.

Leader(s) & Staff

  • English Language
  • Conservation and Biodiversity
  • Rock Climbing, Ice Climbing, and Mountaineering (For expedition leaders)

Altitude Information
What is Altitude?
Altitude is known as elevation, and it is often used to refer to the height above sea level. Altitude is related to air pressure. Trekkers and mountaineers can measure their altitude by measuring the air pressure around them. As the altitude rises, air pressure drops. In other words, if the indicated altitude is high, the air pressure becomes low. The human body reacts to high altitudes. Decreased air pressure means that less oxygen is available for breathing. One normal effect of altitude is shortness of breath since the lungs have to work harder to deliver oxygen to the bloodstream. It can take days and even weeks for a body to adjust to high altitude and low air pressure. To prevent severe altitude sickness, mountaineers bring supplemental (extra) supplies of oxygen and limit their time in the 'high elevation'.

Acclimatization
We are experts at operating adventure trips at high-altitude destinations. Every trip we run has a realistic acclimatization program. Our treks are designed to allow gradual height gain, spread over several days. There is no way of predicting who will suffer from altitude but, for the vast majority of people, a slow ascent to height will produce minimal effects. Acclimatizing takes time and there are no safe shortcuts. All trips to altitudes over 3,000 meters carry medicines essential to the treatment of altitude illness, and our leaders are trained to administer them and to know the symptoms.

Symptoms & signs of Acute Mountain Sickness

  • Headache (typically throbbing, often worse for bending over or lying down), Additionally one or more of the following symptoms might be seen:
  • Tiredness, weakness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Loss of appetite, nausea (or vomiting)
  • Insomnia, disturbed sleep
  • Dizziness, fatigue, lethargy, heavy legs

Treatment
The only cure for mountain sickness is either acclimatization or descent to a lower altitude as soon as possible. In the presence of these symptoms, medical attention must be sought immediately in conjunction with a descent to the lowest possible height.

  • Rest (avoid even the slightest exertion if this is possible) at the same (or lower) altitude until the symptoms clear (up to 4 days)
  • Drink enough to keep your urine pale and plentiful
  • Use ibuprofen or paracetamol for headache
  • Consider Diamox™ (125 to 250 mg 12-hourly) for 3 days, or for the rest of the time at altitude if symptoms return
  • Consider Stemeti™l (or other anti-vomiting medication) for persistent nausea/vomiting
  • If AMS symptoms are severe, give oxygen (1 to 2 L/min) OR use a pressure bag until symptoms clear
  • Check the victim regularly for signs of HAPE and HACE, especially during the night
  • Descend far enough to clear symptoms (at least 500m/1640ft) if symptoms of AMS do not improve or get worse

What do we do if we are affected by Altitude Sickness?
Sometimes trekkers might suffer from ailments like altitude sickness, heart problems, dysentery, or fracture while trekking in the Himalayas. While there are clinics at some places for minor ailments, major hospitals are days away from most of the trekking trails. So, a client’s life could be at risk if he/she is not rescued immediately. If you find yourself ill or injured in the mountains, Nepal Vision Treks will arrange rescue and evacuation services for our clients.

Helicopter rescue services will rarely come to your aid without you either making a cash deposit or a promise in Kathmandu. While you are traveling with us, we can become the guarantor for the helicopter operators, make the initial payments, and send a helicopter for your rescue. We claim the amount later from you or your insurance. Please make sure you have travel insurance that covers emergency helicopter services for rescue to avail of this service.

Our expert and trained guides are very experienced in dealing with the effects of higher altitudes. They are equipped with necessary first-aid medical supplies and will assist with basic first-aid treatment. The safety of our clients is taken very seriously and conducted the operation swiftly and didn’t panic for a second to come up with a proper operation.

Vaccination:
Vaccination is the most important thing to consider while traveling to prevent possible diseases. For traveling to Nepal, we recommend you take vaccines against Polio, Tetanus, Typhoid, Hepatitis A, etc. However, it is not a must to have but it is recommended. You should check up with your doctor before the departure of your trip. Your doctor will have access to the most up-to-date information on the required vaccinations for the country you will be visiting.

Extra Expenses Information
You are responsible for your expenses, a cold beverage, mineral water, extra meals, and drinks (more than 3 meals a day), and other services which are not mentioned in our service Includes column. So you should be planning to bring at least US$20 to US$30 per day for these expenses. It is not necessary to obtain local money before departure. Nepal has modern banking facilities so you can use ATMS in Kathmandu where you can easily use your credit card, Debit card, Master card, Visa card, etc. to withdraw local currency.

COVID Precautions
Fully vaccinated travelers don't require a pre-departure PCR test for COVID-19 to enter Nepal. You must bring the vaccination certificate completed at least 14 days prior to arrival at the Airport. In case you are not fully vaccinated or have not completed a full dose of vaccination at least 14 days prior to your arrival in Nepal, you have to bring a COVID-19 test report which can be either RT-PCR, Gene Experr, True NAAT, or WHO accredited test that shows the negative result done within the last 72 hours of boarding from the first airport. In case you are entering through the land border, you will need to do the test within 72 hours before entry. The provision will not be accepted for children below 5 years.

Things to Consider
There are a few important things you need to know before traveling to Nepal so that you can have a smooth journey to Nepal.

  • Be prepared for major emergencies. Nepal experiences natural calamities like Earthquakes, Landslides, floods, and several others. Carrying an emergency kit with necessary first aid supplies and bottled water will be a great help.
  • Take care while you photograph as it's illegal to photograph army barracks, checkpoints, many temples, and many other areas.
  • Don't use any illegal drugs. The government of Nepal might take this as a severe charge and also might ask for a sum of penalties for drug offenses.
  • Check with your intended tour provider despite Nepal issuing trekking and mountaineering permits.
  • Exchange foreign currencies for NPR which will be available at banks or any exchange bureaus. Those can be found in major centers. Most hotels and restaurants accept credit cards but it's better to carry some fleece cash. Make sure you carry enough cash to cover your needs because not all areas have ATMs.
  • Use the registered taxis. Some taxi drivers may take ask for higher amounts by fooling novice travelers, so make sure you consider checking for prices.
